How Sleep Test is Done?

Sleep Tests for the purpose of a sleep study, are done over the course of the night and require the patient to sleep for about a period of 6-7 hrs. Sometimes otherwise is also considered. These tests are usually done in a sleep lab, requiring the patient to spend the night in a lab, but with the advancement of technology, sleep tests are done at home and therefore known as a home sleep study or home sleep tests.

How Sleep Test is done?

Home sleep tests are done at home and it requires that you follow the normal regular routine. You must avoid napping and eliminate the use of caffeine after lunch as this might interfere with your sleep. If you are on any medication, your doctor may temporarily discontinue or advise you otherwise. Make sure that you are in your comfortable sleepwear and you follow your exact nighttime routine.

The doctors provide you with the equipment and also train you on how to use it. During your regular bedtime, you need to attach the sensors to your body as instructed by your doctor. You need to record the timing you went to bed and the time you woke up.

Once the equipment and the details are returned to the doctor, they will score and interpret the information collected which might take up to a few days or weeks.

Depending on the results, the doctor might suggest you for in-lab tests or medications.
